St. Augustine Bedtime Stories

I’ve subscribed to The St. Augustine Report for some time now. The Report is written and published by former St. Augustine mayor George Gardner, who is as completely charmed by the old city as I am. (If that’s possible.) Of course, I am a total news-hound when it comes to St. Augustine, and I appreciate the time and effort Mr. Gardner puts into this project of his. I’d noticed a line in the St. Augustine Report with a link to purchase St. Augustine Bedtime Stories, and one day when I had a few more functioning brain cells than normal, and I remembered [ ... ]

What is Rhythm & Ribs, and Why Does It Matter?

This Friday, April 5, at 4 pm, the gates will open on one of St Augustine’s most beloved annual festivals, Rhythm & Ribs. We all know St Augustine (The Town That Likes to Party) will make a festival out of anything, so why does this one matter so much? Food and drink will be consumed, art, jewelry, and other stuff will be sold, and there’ll be plenty for the whole family to do, including stuff for the kids and live music for everyone. This sounds very much like many festivals you’ve been to, so why does this one matter so much? On [ ... ]

It Still Smells The Same ~ The Colonial Quarter Opens ~ Part 2

It may seem silly to someone unfamiliar with St Augustine, or to someone who isn’t particularly interested in historic preservation or old houses, but one of my fears for the renovation of the old Colonial Spanish Quarter was that it wouldn’t smell the same afterward. If you are an obsessive historic preservationist like me, you know exactly the smell I’m talking about. Sort of damp, not really musty, though; warm, kind of brown and a little dark. Sometimes I smell it in places other than St Augustine, and when I do, I am immediately catapulted back to my favorite town. I was [ ... ]

Surviving Foaling Season – Now in Kindle Store

My short humorous story, Surviving Foaling Season, is now available from Salt Run Publishing LLC, in the Amazon Kindle Store. Here’s an excerpt: ‘Tis the season for the foaling! (Or it will be.) If you are a “horse person,” you know what that means. If you are not, here is a definition for you: Foaling: the act of a female equine (mare) giving birth to young (foal). The process takes anywhere from eleven months to a decade, depending on whether you’re measuring time in “normal horse years,” or “impatient owner years.” Anticipation of this event can result in actions as simple as daily [ ... ]
